No More Pining For Phil Wood

Any hopes of having Phil Wood involved in the Nats broadcasts have decreased. DCRTV Sez:
Phil Wood To XM, Examiner - 2/1 - DCRTV hears that Phil Wood has nabbed a fulltime gig with DC's XM Satellite Radio for its new baseball channel that goes live 2/15. Plus, Wood has been hired by the new Washington Examiner as a baseball columnist. He'll do a weekly write-up that largely covers the Nationals for the free daily. Sports talker Wood, who used to work for WTEM a few years back, plans to continue doing his Saturday show on WJFK-AM in Baltimore.

I listened to him a few times and didn't understand the lovefest for him. Yeah, he has an encylopedic knowledge of Washington Baseball, but I don't get particularly weepy-eyed about the crappy Senators teams of the '60s. And no one ever wants to discuss Goose Goslin, Firpo Marberry or Bucky Harris.

  • I don't get Wood, either. Maybe it's that seemingly no one else on DC radio knows much or cares that much about baseball.

Anyway, didn't Wood rub some people the wrong way for supporting the "Loudon Cabal"?

  • He's a good guy, and was always the ONLY guy on WTEM who knew ANYTHING about baseball, and actually had some limited "stat-head" knowledge back in the day.

  • I'm sure he's nice enough, but I used to hear him a bit on WTEM and just thought he was boring. Seems to know a lot about the old days. Good for him. The thing that bothered me was that he seemed to be a bit baseball-ier than thou. It wasn't enough to like baseball. If you didn't memorize the back of every player card, it seemed like you were beneath his attention. I remember one time he was talking to Wilbon on-air when Wilbon was covering the NBA finals. Wilbon talked about how much he loved the NBA and the finals, especially. Wood piped in with something like, "but isn't it true, Michael, that the lowest-rated World Series got better ratings than the highest-rated Finals?" Irked me. Totally irrelevant to the conversation they were having.
