Fearless/Gutless Predictions For The Second Half

1. Jason Bergmann will have an ERA over 4 in the second half. Sore elbows and regression from his league-leading BABIP will bring him back to normal. But he'll win more than 1 game!

2. Dmitri Young will not be traded by July 31, but not for lack of effort by the Nats.

3. Ryan Zimmerman will get his 100 RBI. The guys ahead of him will finally get on base.

4. Ryan Church will not be a regular OFer with the Nats by the end of the season.

5. Felipe Lopez will have a .340 on-base percentage in the second half.

6. Chad Cordero will not get traded, but Jon Rauch will.

7. Matt Chico will finish 6th in ROY voting.

8. Austin Kearns will lead the team in second-half homers.

9. The team, which scored 326 in the first half, will score around 350 in the second half in fewer games.

10. The Devil Rays will edge the Nats by 3 games for the #1 draft pick.

11. Dmitri Young will finish with a batting average closer to .320 than .340.

12. Alex Escobar, once activated, will finally stay healthy. But he won't hit or field well.

13. Ryan Zimmerman will be close to .280 by the end of the year.

14. Jim Bowden will say something that will make you cringe.

15. Stan Kasten will say something convoluted that doesn't actually mean what you think it does once he says it.

16. Uncle Teddy will dive into his money vault with his three nephews.

17. The Nats will go 35-39 in the second half.

18. I will look like a fool by the end of the year.

19. I already look like a fool.

  • You're ducking the tough question, dude. Will the Nats actually summon the cojones to DFA Nook Logan, or do we have to hope that the only way they finally manage to get rid of him is to have him wander, looking lost all the way, onto the wrong team's bus at the end of a road game, then wander aimlessly onto the field in that other team's uniform - hopefully not hitting his first-ever grand slam to beat the Nats along the way? (Looking lost all the way around the bases, of course...)

  • Chris,

I sense optimism in your predictions. Why the positive attitude and hightened expectations?

Prediction #2 confirms some fears I've been having. If they could unload Daryl Ward and Marlon Anderson last year, they can unload Da Meat Hook, right?

Predictions 14, 15, and 16 are surprisingly gutless. They're guaranteed to happen.

However, when Kasten speaks, I'm depending on you to translate please.

  • I'm not overly optimistic, but there's a lot of room for growth.

There's not one player on this team, save for Dmitri, whom you can point to and say, "Man, I really don't think he can keep this pace up."

You CAN say the opposite of the offense. There are a number of guys who SHOULD be playing better. If you look at FLop, for example, he's been decent over the last 3-4 weeks. So there's some hope there.

If the offense improves and the pitching holds steady, it's a better team than it showed in the first half.

  • hmmm....verrrrry optimistic. I think that's what happens when you sit around with no games to watch for almost a week and then they go and break out for 14 runs....

I can't wait for Escobar to come back...it'll be a fun 3 weeks while he's on the field.

  • I agree with you about Dmitri. Just like last year's Soriano non-trade, Bowden will want too much for what will amount to a two-month rental of Dmitri and he will ride out the year with the Nats.

Would we get a draft pick for him if he leaves?

  • We will be keeping Nook (sad to say, I know).

We will be trading Young and Ronnie

How do I know, easy Jimbo is never wrong and these things were decided in his mind before the season started.

    Proven.

  • Schneider, Lopez, Zim, Kearns, Church and whoever the other outfielder is ALL will hit better than in the first half. Plus, some of the sore arms will return, and some of those will pitch well.

However, with all this good news, you have to wonder if this team will ever have enough firepower this year to make it interesting to watch these games? We aren't even SUPPOSED to be interested. A written-off season is part of the Plan.

This means they have to unload old timers for kids, so that "someday" we can have a more interesting team.

  • The D-Rays?! No way. Krivsky's got a mortal lock on that #1 pick. It's part of the MLB-imposed settlement of Gary-gate. Just you wait and see.

But if Meat Hook isn't moved, and I tend to agree he won't be, it's not because Trader Jim asked for the moon (for a change) but because Carlos Pena, Scott Hatteberg, Mark Texiera, Kevin Millar and 2 or 3 other guys are better options at 1B for a contender. Dmitri is, after all, a DH with a mitt.

  • Did you say Austin "Can o' Corn" Kearns will lead the team in home runs in the second half?!! He's only hit four out of the park all year and looks clueless at the plate. His last homerun was hit on May 25. My money would be on Zimmerman, but I'd be shocked if anyone on the team hits more than 10 the rest of the year. I hope I'm wrong.
