Memo To Bowden: An Angel For The Infield

The San Francisco Giants designated SS Angel Chavez for Assignment to clear room on their 40-man roster for Todd Greene. Given the craptastic hitting and fielding of Royce Clayton, Bowden NEEDS to acquire Chavez (or someone like him). There's no depth at that position in the system. Brendan Harris, whose defense was used as an excuse to bury him in the minors last year, is presumably going to play shortstop at New Orleans. A big league shortstop he is not.

Chavez is nothing extraordinary (STATS). But he showed a little bit of power and a little bit of patience in the minors. At worst, he flames out. At best, he comes close to his minor league numbers, and shortstop isn't a sinkhole. He's young, unlike Clayton, so there's probably room to improve.

I don't know anything about his defense, and I don't know if there were extenuating circumstances with his release. But he's the kind of player that Bowden needs to bring in -- available practically for free, and filling a need this team has.

Check him out, Jim. Maybe there's something there. Maybe not.

While you're out it, check out these guys. They were designated, too:
Erasmo Ramirez; Scott Dunn; Marcos Carvajal

You can never have too much depth!

  • Brandon Phillips was DFA'd by Cleveland, as well, tho supposedly theyre trying to work out a trade involving him. I guess there are probably a few teams interested in him...

  • Yeah, I saw Phillips. The problem is well... what position does he play?

    Yep. Second base.

    Sigh.

  • He came up as a SS tho and, if im not mistaken, he played SS at AAA Buffalo last year. He was competing for the Indians' utility INF spot so that leads me to believe they were comfortable with him playing SS.

  • I didn't know he played it in the minors. If so, he should look into him then. Although he has a better known name, I'm not sure he's much better than Chavez.

But that's the point... there are options, and Bowden needs to do something, because Clayton's not going to cut it.
