Not All Academics Stink

God Bless Sam Riley
When it comes to the "O," [shouted during the National Anthem] the problem is strictly geographical. Like creeping fescue, or a rash, it even has spread beyond D.C. environs to places like Blacksburg, Va., the home of Virginia Tech.

"It just seems to me to be a no-class, meatheaded thing to do," said Sam Riley, a professor of communication studies at the school. "It's embarrassing."

Let's get that guy some kind of grant!

  • I believe the "O" represents the average bank accounts of those rusted 1968 Olds Cutlass-driving scholars from Glen Burnie, Dundalk and other East Coast tourist hot spots.

  • As a Hokie alum I feel Sam's pain. Every time I hear the "O", I shed a tear, for it cheapens the meaning.

  • Is it just me or does Bacsik come across as a liar in the last paragraph? Earlier in the article it mentions Dallas Stars yelling "STARS!" and having been to the Dallas arena I can say that's true.

  • Yes, strange. And let me tell you, in Dallas, 20,000 people yell "Stars!" as loud as they can. Hard to miss. Sounds like Mike has never actually been to a game.

BTW I hate just about everything about that city, but I must say it pains me to watch that. I wish we had such dedicated fans fill our arenas.

At least after 3 seasons the "Os" have pretty much come to a stop at Nationals Games (except of course when the Os are in town, grr...).

  • anon 9:41: It's just you. Bacsik said that Dallas-ites don't do the "STARS" at Cowboys, Rangers, or Mavericks games, implying that's it's just done at hockey games.

  • It has been known to appear at Penn State football games as well.

    Well that makes sense...

  • As a current Hokie, I can't remember a time where I've heard the "O". I know I would shed a tear, just like Kyle, if I had.

  • I hate the "O". I think a lot of people just shout it because they think its cool. go ahead and do it at O's games but at Nats games, Caps games, and Wizards games, it has to stop.

  • You people are expecting more from O's fans and VT fans/alums?

Shouting "O" during the National Anthem is pure idiocy.

    I rest my case.

  • Do those Baltimorons run to Toronto and holler O at the beginning of the Canadian National anthem? That might test international relations.

  • I was at the George Mason basketball game last night and the guys behind me did it. I was amazed. Dumbest thing ever.

  • Whenever anyone yells "O's" during the Nat'l. Anthem I like to yell out "SUCK!" This is good for a chuckle or two and let's O's fan know they ain't all that.
