Hands Off!

Rosenthal says that Mike Rizzo is a "potential candidate" for the Astros vacant GM job.

What the hell does "potential candidate" mean?
1) The Astros are interested in him, but haven't made a formal move to ask permission to interview him; or
2) I'm pulling a name out of my ass and using 'potential' to cover up my wild-ass guess.

  • It means Rosenthal called me up and asked who we liked as GM candidates. And I said we don't have any yet, but if I were involved with a team that had a GM opening and was looking at some candidates then Rizzo would be on the list. Hypothetically. I also told him I'm too old for this damn job.

  • Tell Tal that he can't have Rizzo but we will swap him Bowden for Hunter Pence, straight up.

  • I think it is going to be very difficult to keep Rizzo and maybe even Brown around for any length of time unless they are personally content at their positions. Some guys do enjoy the scouting end of baseball and are fulfilled doing it and stay as SDs for their careers. But a lot of guys use these positions as stepping stones to GM positions and if Rizzo and Brown have those ambitions they are blocked by Bowden. The notion that Rizzo is going to replace Bowden, regardless of Kasten’s vagueness as to the length of his contract, is mostly wishful thinking imo. Bowden seems firmly entrenched in the FO and his ability to brown nose should be studied in graduate business schools so future climbers up the corporate ladder can learn from a true master. Why wouldn’t any team want to hire Rizzo for GM? Why wouldn’t any team want to hire Brown for an assistant GM and support a team’s SD? They’re proven talent pickers and it looks like they have no where to advance in DC.
