Casto Yo-Yo
To make room for Jerome Williams -- who's being activated off the DL -- the Nats sent never-used OFer Kory Casto to Triple-A.
Screw the plan, and all that.
Kory hasn't been used, and the team would rather see non-players like Robert Fick, Ron Belliard and Dmitri Young fritter away ABs at first than let a semi-young potentially useful player like Casto have a chance to learn and grow.
But, if that's what they've decided to do, sending him down is the right move. He needs regular playing time more than anything. Last week, he came to the plate just twice. You can't do that to a kid.

The plan also includes flipping vets for prospects at the deadline. Fick, Young, Belliard all trade bait. Casto will get his PT all of August and September. Relax

Who's going to trade for Fick, Young or Belliard?
It takes two to trade.
Look at what the Indians got for Belliard last year.
Look at what we got for Daryle Ward, a player who was having a truly great season, and smacking the crap out of the ball, which none of those players are doing.
Sure, something is better than nothing. But screwing over Casto's development -- a player who has an actual chance for success -- for a miniscule chance of future potential doesn't make much sense to me.

Look, Casto has no future. He's like Terrmell Sledge only without the power or a glimmer of hope.
He is a fourth outfielder at best. I shed no tears for him.
I'd be more upset if it was a legitimate prospect being screwed over like Mike Daniel or even Chris Marrero.

How can anyone make a determination about Casto after less than 50 MLB at bats? Freakin' Willie Mays started his career 0 for 21.
The "plan" and the Nats future would be better served by figuring out if Casto can play rather than playing Robert Fick or Belliard in the hope that the Nats get a fringe prospect for one of them.

I'll duck when the savvy throw stats to the contrary at me, but I like Young, Belliard, Logan off the bench much more than Casto. During that marathon game, there were actually some useful at bats off the bench in that ninth inning. One got the feeling there was actual promise for a hit or two. Before, there was a feeling of complete futility as we saw Fick, Casto, Restovich and company stroll up to the plate in the later innings.
It was nice to have Logan available to pinch run, as well.
Casto isn't useful as a part timer, yet. If he's not playing regularly, he doesn't promise to get much better. I'm certainly for giving him a go at first base, as it would be nice to end the comedy over there. But if not, let him keep learning at AAA.
Now Batista...Fick...they really need to go.
But with Guzman back and impersonating a major league shortstop, I like what the bench has become.

i'd love to see if kasto has anything but he has been so overmatched in his 50 ABs, it's clear that he needs to play every day in AAA. hey, that rhymes!
