Brian Schneider

Left-handed catcher

Schneider's current contract ends after 2009. It pays him $3.5 million in 2007 and $4.9 in 2008 and 2009.

Schneider had a terrible 2006, struggling offensively for most of the season before hitting much better in the closing two months. He's the kind of batter who doesn't really excel at anything, but is solid overall -- especially for a catcher.

Defensively, he has an above average arm with decent accuracy. Teams rarely ran on him in 2005, but seemed to take more advantage of him in 2006. There was speculation that he was injured, and did miss time with a hamstring injury mid-season, but much of it was attributed to a breakdown in the pitchers' ability to hold runners.
