I don't think any team should retire a number. Just recognize him by name and put his number or numbers beside his name. What number should you retire for Frank Howard, 9 or 33. He wore 9 for more years in Washington than the 33 most fans think.
Until they retire 3, for Babe Ruth, across the Majors, retiring numbers mean nothing. The Babe saved baseball after the 1919 scandal. Also, he was the best of all time. Before you say Aaron or anyone else, Hank went to bat close to 3,000 more than the Babe. Did Aaron win 94 games as a pitcher?
Also, if it wasn't for the Babe after the scandal, Jackie Robinson would probably been in football and not had a chance to play baseball.
I think you got it exactly right Chris. Well put. Nothing wrong with honoring Dawson or including Expos on the Ring of Honor (kudos to the Nats for cooking that up so quickly and getting it done in time for last night's ceremony). But let's not pretend that the Expos mean, or should mean, anything to Nats fans. Most of us are just glad they were so lousy that they could be moved to DC.
