Would a good franchise make a roster decision primarily based upon the fact that one of the players, whose contract is about to expire, is making a bazillion dollars?
I want to get worked up over this, and lord knows I just cannot stand Cristian Guzman in his role as "ballplayer".
But for whatever reason, even as he continues to perform, I just cannot find it in myself to believe that Ian Desmond is going to stick. And the worst thing is that, the only reason I can figure that I feel that way is all the ridiculous hype about the guy five years ago. Which is, obviously, not his fault and, more to the point, not objectively meaningful at all.

To paraphrase the immortal words of Joey Eischen: "You will play Guzman and you will suck on it."
Sure, Desmond is ready for the bigs.
No way he starts. Why? I'll give you eight million reasons why, Uncle Teddy.

ROI (Return on Investment). That's what happens when the bottom line is more important than winning.

It's not about money, it's about saving face. They'll spend 8 million whether he plays or not. The money is the same either way.
