The Round Mound Who Rebounded
Lookout Landing has a retrospective of Jose Vidro's surprising season. Most Mariners fans were readying the pitchforks and torches when Bowden unloaded the roly-poly DH for a fat reliever and a gimpy outfielder.
Neither of the acquisitions are still with the team, but getting anything of value for Vidro was viewed as a success by most Nats fans because getting out from under his contract was the big thing.
Well, a funny thing happened on the way to mediocrity: Vidro hit a lot of singles. A Lot. And he had a decent year. But Mariners fans still aren't completely happy, and you'll have to read that to find out why.
But truthfully, I'm linking it because I love this image.

Chris-
You have to mention that the trade ended up being Vidro for Wily Mo!

I have to say, Willy Mo' and Ryan Church are the '08 Nats two most intriguing storylines in my book (other than the starting pitching which always provides drama).
I can't wait to see whether Willy Mo's performance last year was just fluky or whether he makes the Sox sorry they traded him away. I'm also betting that Church (assuming that we don't sign A. Jones) will have a breakout ~25 homer season playing in the more run-neutral Nationals Field. The Nationals outfield as a whole should be really fun to watch, and I'm wondering whether or not they will establish themselves as one of the better outfields in the NL.

Here's a question for you Chris not involving the albatross that was Vidro. If the Twins put Santana on the block, would the Nationals have a chance in hell of getting him? I mean, what kind of insane package would they have to put together?

Great image -- and to think our new scoreboard may have space for such fun.

You can't trade last year's draft picks within a year of the draft.
Even if you lifted that rule, Marrero and Detwiler wouldn't be enough.
If you threw in Zimmerman, I'm sure they'd listen.
Willing to do that? Didn't think so. ;)

Not only that, but while Santana is good, he's almost certainly guaranteed to only decline during the life of the contract, meaning that he's only really useful as a piece for someone who is ready to contend now, not later.

Let's not take this 'decline' stuff too far. The guy's 28. He's got a lot of years (barring injury, of course), and he's good enough, that it'll be a loooooong time before he's Mike Bacsik.

Hell of a title.
