Cropp Goes The Weasel

Congrats to Tom Knott (Or at least his editors) for the best headline.

Meanwhile, the Post reports it's essentially a done deal with the mayor's plan--and that the backers want their payoffs.

And the Times has an article on GM's reactions to yesterday's Cropp-y events. *groan*

  • Chris - I heard something on the John Thompson Show on Monday that I thought was thought provoking. A caller stated the underlying issue with this whole ballpark thing is the racial perception of Washington DC. The caller said he can only imagine the old boy's network that is MLB (i.e. old white guys) are just rolling their eyes at how the DC Council is tripping all over itself (i.e. clueless African-Americans). John Thompson quickly agreed and said this could very easily be the perception outsiders have of Washington DC and its management.

  • Certainly with the city's continued love of Marion Barry, it's easy to see how the perception is out there. And, if the deal does get fouled up, I think some of those inherent biases may come up to rationalize the reasons for the screw-up, but every indication is that this is a done deal. The mayor claims to have his seven votes and Linda even says she may go along with his plans.

It's just her desire to try something different and be the hero in the end.

The city's just too far along in the process and has invested too much in this project to not see it get done at this point.

And despite their contention otherwise, MLB needs this. There aren't really any other markets that could have the team now. They're just afraid as anyone.

  • MLB has proven one thing. They are the most illogical group ever. Who would have ever thought a group of business owners would fund a fraction of a "competing" (I use that term loosely) team. The problem I see with Cropp's grandstanding is this ... MLB will simply hold onto the team until Northern Virginia gets its ducks in a row or Portland/Vegas get their acts together. They did not want to come to DC, they had to bribed with a sweetheart deal to relocate here. As a resident of the DC metro area and a HUGE baseball fan, I want to see a team here from 2005 on out.
I'm hoping someone can convince the grandstanding mayor wannabe to get a deal done. The funny thing I see with this whole SNAFU is that it has done more harm to Cropp's political aspirations. She is now perceived as waffling, indecisive, petty, backstabbing, and disingenuine.
Let's hope we'll be throwing back beers on April 15 toasting a team for the long run.
