Mystery Pitcher

With Shawn Hill's injury, the Nats seem ready to break the [penny] bank and dip into the free agent pitching market.
Acta said: "We are not releasing the name yet. Some things are in the works. We just can't post it."

Does that mean the Nationals are about to add another starter to the Spring Training roster? According to one source, it appears to be the case.

Who could it be now?

Eric Milton? Former Red. Former Terp. 2-time NL Homer Champion.

Roger Clemens? Has the right reputation for the team, spends plenty of time in DC, but probably wants to be paid.

Kyle Lohse and Jeff Weaver? Solid #4-types who eat innings. And boy, do they. But they're Boras clients, and probably want more than a personal services contract.

Russ Ortiz? Former Brave! Two-time NL BB champion!

Ramon Ortiz? [blacks out] huh? where was I?

Mike Bacsik, Sr? Can't be any worse, can he?

Sidney Ponson? Fills fat-pitcher quotient, which was falling dangerously low. Has a criminal record, so he'd fit in nicely.

David Wells? Fills fat-pitcher quotient, which was falling dangerously low. Training staff would have to brush up on gout treatments.

Steve Rogers? Franchise great has a 3.17 career ERA and a vicious curve. Still unsigned, and likely to come cheaply.

Walter Johnson's Corpse? Can't be worse than Bacsik (junior). Doesn't appear as if his resting spot has been disturbed, though.

  • Well, they could also be trying to work some kind of a trade with either NJ or Dmitri Young or one of the Nats lower-level outfield prospects (seeing as how things look pretty locked up atm). Also, since you get to speculate about Walter Johnson's corpse, they could try to move one of the 4 outfielders (Kearns, perhaps). There are definitely teams that need offense, such as the Giants, who have surplus pitchers. See also the Mets' who need a replacement for Delgado, or the Yankees who are trying to find someone, anyone to even semi-replace Giambi's production at 1st without being a total defensive liability.

The fact that they aren't willing to release information would seem much more indicative of a trade situation, wouldn't it?

Yes, Dmitri Young would definitely fill that gaping hole, wouldn't he?
