Youppi!

Youppi, the Montreal Expos former mascot, made his triumphant debut with the Montreal Canadiens. Youppi is ten times the mascot of Screech, who's main talent seems to be walking.

The Canadiens also did something the Nationals should've done -- retired the Expos' numbers. Gary Carter and Andre Dawson attended and raised a banner honoring those players.

It really is a shame that the Nationals are ignoring the team's history, starting with assigning Tim Raines' retired number to Mike Stanton.

  • I can understand why the left the Expos history in Montreal. I was hoping they would retire a few numbers from the past:

    20 Josh Gibson
25 Walter Johnson (could be a few different ones actually)
    32 Buck Leonard
    33 Frank Howard

There are other Senators who would also be worthy, but I think these cover the big guys.

  • I wish they'd get rid of that cheap "Hall of Stars" banner in right field. RFK, for the time being, belongs to the Nationals and United. There's no reason to honor tennis players, golfers, and Redskins there.

  • With that logic you could have argued there was no reason to honor baseball players for the last 25 seasons the Redskins played in RFK.

I agree the banner is cheap, but I like that they have *something* up there. I would have preferred the original signs stayed up instead.

  • A case can be made for leaving 8 and 30 since this is a continuation of the Expos franchise. But Frank Howard? He was a Senator. That franchise is in Texas now. Walter Johnson? That franchise is in Minnesota now. That's not continuity that I'd appreciate. Heck, the Nationals should retire 40 for Ronald Reagan.

  • Then RFK can retire 8 and 30 and not the Nats. Because using the logic that RFK means honoring DC's past sports stars, someone should demand that 7 be retired for Joey T., 9 for Sonny, or 33 for Sammy Baugh.

I'm perfectly happy with the banner. The old placards would have been nice.
