Why You Should Love Manny Acta

Part one thousand-something...
"I'm not the biggest stolen base fan in the world," Acta said. "I was there with the Mets, two years in a row we led the league in stolen bases and we didn't win the World Series. They did it again last year and they didn't win the division. The fact is, if you have guys like [Jose] Reyes, who are over 70 percent rate, and [Carlos] Beltran, that really helps your offense. But there's very few guys in the game that can do that. It's tough to find two, three four on one team. If you don't have success doing it, I see that as very risky business, giving outs away on the bases ... it is the quality of them, to steal when you need to and steal them consistently with a very good success rate."

A far cry from the Frank Robinson Era. They were 45-45 SB-CS in 2005. Just thinking about that makes my teeth hurt.

Contrast that with the idiot Mariners manager who's suggesting that Ichiro should run more, CS be damned. And contrast that with the intelligent response of Ichiro, who sounds like he wouldn't mind playing for someone like Acta.

  • Looks like our boy Church just got some karmic retribution for his comments Chris.

As a side note, with this and having listened to the Nats' first two spring training games, it's clear that the players need A LOT OF practice calling each other off. I can't believe how deeply rooted this problem seems, but every time I turn around, we see Nats (or in the case of Church, former Nats) just not calling each other off while fielding. It shouldn't be that hard--little leaguers can do it.

  • Quick update:

Apparently, Church has a concussion and has no memory of the collision or the play itself.

  • As a met fan I can say I'd rather have Manny Acta than Willie Randolph. letting acta go was one of the worst moves we've made as an orginazation.
Anyway, if you get the time please check out my 2008 NL East Preview at http://ultimatebaseball-cgouds.blogspot.com.
