Postcard From Wherever
Greetings from Sunnytown, Florida! Boy, it sure is sunny down here. Don’t you wish you weren’t stuck back up north where it’s cold and you have to work?
I kid, I kid. It’s still a little bit brisk down here, and I’ve got work to do.
With that in mind, here’s some news.
General Manager says he’s “very happy” with how the offseason went, although he’s still looking to “add pieces.” But he doesn’t want to spend too much to do so. So we’ll have to wait and see how things play out down here in Sunnytown.
Manager anticipates “continued improvement” from Young Player A and Young Player B. He says that growing pains are natural as young players mature into professionals. Focus and fundamentals are important. That’s why you bring in some veterans, to teach the kids.
Speaking of veterans, most of the lineup slots are locked down already, but keep an eye on NRI to see if he can break camp as a reserve. He’s coming off a down year or two, but it wasn’t too long ago that he was a regular for Some Other Team. NRI could offer some depth and perhaps insurance in case Established Regular is out with injury.
It’s early so far, but most of the pitchers in camp look good. So and So has worked on some mechanical issues, and Who’s It added a sharp new breaking ball. And Unattributed Scout is absolutely raving about Remember Him.
To improve from last year, the pitching staff needs more consistency and the starters need to go deeper in games. And they need to limit mistakes. Too many walks. Pitching Coach is on it, rest assured.
The big battle in Sunnytown will be for the last spot in the rotation, or maybe the last two if Tender Elbow starts the season on the disabled list. Young Guy With Options showed something back in September, but Veteran Placeholder might have the inside track. Stay tuned.
Overall, the mood down here is positive and relaxed. But not too relaxed. Upbeat Team Chemistry Guy is providing some funny quotes, but Clubhouse Leader is making sure things will be all business between the lines. Aside from wanting to see a little bit more from the youngsters, Manager is satisfied so far.
It’s probably a little bit soon to talk about contending, but there’s no doubt that Team is noticeably improved.
